"Oh, santísima cruz", a prayer by Juan Berges (fl. 1637-1680)

Abstract

[EN] Juan Berges, tenor at Saragossa catedral (La Seo) active between 1637 and 1680, composed expressive music for a prayer to the Holy Cross, which was recorded in a book of Litany and other pieces compiled between 1616 and 1676. It is possible that the painful and eloquent character of the piece was influenced, apart from its own subject matter, by external circumstances such as the great plague of the mid-seventeenth century, which reached Saragossa in 1652 and wiped out a quarter of the city's population. Among the victims was the chapel master of La Seo, Fray Manuel Correa.
