Abstract

El presente estudio bactereologico fue realizado en la Fosa de Cariaco a 10º30'N, 64º36'W. El objetivo principal de esta investigacion fue explorar, en una amplia extension, los diferentes grupos fisiologicos de bacterias, con especial enfasis en aquellas que se encuentran estrechamente relacionadas con los ciclos del nitrogeno y el azufre. Entre los resultados encontrados en los analisis de los diferentes parametros fisicos y quimicos, debemos hacer especial mencion a la elevada concentracion de SH2. Este importante compuesto quimico se detecto desde los 10 m (o,68 micro mol/1) hasta 1300 m (182,6 micro mol/1. Respecto a los procesos de oxidacion del SH2 hemos encontrado una considerable actividad bacteriana sulfo-oxidante desde la superficie hasta los 200 m. La accion oxidativa altera la distribucion del SH2. No encontramos evidencia de bacterias sulfatorreductoras en toda la columna de agua, por ello concluimos que, el origen del SH2 debe ser resultado de la respiracion bacteriana del ion S04(-2) en el sedimento. Se presenta ademas un analisis teorico del ciclo de Nitrogeno usando un calculo de los valores aproximados de la desnitrificacion en la zona anoxica
