Las Celastraceas se encuentran ampliamente distribuídas por todas las zonas tropicales y cálido-templadas del mundo'. Esta familia se encuentra representada en la Macaronesia por dos especies endémicas, el Maytenus canariensis (Loes) Kunk. et Sund (Catha cassinoides), que crece en todas las Islas Canarias excepto en la de Lanzarote, y el Maytenus driadndry (Lowe) Loes, que lo hace en las Islas de Madeira y Porto Santo.
