José Royo y Gómez is the first palaeontologist who carried out the task to establish the dinosaur diversity in Spain. He put in a lot of effort to make up for the absence of knowledge on the Spanish dinosaurology, whereas in other European and American countries was very developed. The analysis of the unpublished documents of the author housed in the Files of the MNCN of Madrid, and the finding in the collections of the MNCN of some of the cited specimens, allows to reconstruct how their studies were developed. These have shed light on many doubts, imprecisions and errors existing among them. In this way, it is possible to valuate the work carried out by this pioneer of the Spanish vertebrate palaeontology. Royo y Gómez initiated a series of studies that were many years without any continuity

José Royo y Gómez es el primer paleontólogo que realiza estudios dirigidos a establecer la diversidad de dinosaurios en España, paliando parcialmente la falta de información sobre el registro español en un momento en el que la dinosauriología estaba muy desarrollada en otros países europeos y americanos. El análisis de la documentación inédita de dicho autor, depositada en el Archivo del MNCN de Madrid, y la localización en los fondos del MNCN de algunos de los ejemplares citados en sus trabajos, permiten reconstruir cómo se desarrollaron sus estudios, aclarándose muchas de las dudas, imprecisiones y errores que existían sobre ellos. De esta manera, se aprecia la gran labor realizada por este paleontólogo iniciando unos estudios que tardarían muchos años en tener continuidad.
