La región S.W. de España es hoy una de las más importantes en cuanto a actividad pesquera se refiere. Basta hacer un ligero recorrido por los principales puertos para darse cuenta que multitud de embarcaciones del N. y N.W. de la península escogen como base Cádiz, Ayamonte, Huelva, etc, para ejercer en esta región sus actividades, bien en el golfo de Cádiz o a lo largo de la dilatada costa del oeste de África.
