El corso en la Andalucía Moderna

Abstract

A lo largo de los siglos XVI-XVIII la defensa del litoral andaluz frente a los ataques corsarios norteafricanos se basó fundamentalmente en la combinación, más o menos eficaz, de un poderoso sistema defensivo terrestre y la actividad, más o menos regular, de las escuadras al servicio de la monarquía. El doble sistema terrestre/marítimo no terminó de demostrarse eficiente, en especial debido a los elevados gastos que suponía mantener una escuadra de guerra permanentemente. Además, las grandes posibilidades que suponían participar en la Carrera hizo que los marineros y armadores del litoral andaluz sintieran escasa inclinación por la aventura corsaria. Por el contrario, la ruptura de hostilidades entre la monarquía hispana con franceses, ingleses u otros enemigos europeos, tenía como consecuencia que el corsarismo contra tales enemigos podía convertirse en un excelente negocio.
