Métodos de liderazgo naval en una época revolucionaria: Mazarredo y Jervis (1779-1808)

Abstract

Se han llevado a cabo valiosos trabajos biográficos por la historiografía nacional e internacional sobre políticos, jefes militares y grandes administradores del largo siglo XVIII atlántico. Pero seguimos necesitando nuevas investigaciones que utilicen como herramienta la moderna teoría del liderazgo. Este nuevo enfoque integra aspectos como la personalidad del líder, sus valores innovadores en el marco social de su época, los instrumentos de su acción reformista, los retos a los que se enfrenta, así como las posibilidades y limitaciones en el ejercicio de su liderazgo. El propósito de esta comunicación es llevar a cabo algunas reflexiones desde esta nueva perspectiva, comparando dos grandes líderes navales de España y Gran Bretaña en el momento culminante de su carrera: el teniente general José de Mazarredo, jefe de la escuadra española del Océano, y el almirante John Jervis, jefe de las escuadras británicas del Mediterráneo y el Canal de la Mancha. Ambos coincidieron en bandos opuestos durante los bloqueos británicos de Cádiz y Brest, entre 1796 y 1802.
