Abstract

[EN] A total of 64 samples of groundwater and surface water, including supply water, were taken in the Villarino Department, south of the Province of Buenos Aires. Major and trace elements were determined by ICP-OES and ICP-MS, except F-, determined by specific ion electrode. Hydrogeochemical information was treated statistically and implemented in a Geographical Information System (GIS). The groundwater samples were grouped into: Group A, recently recharged groundwater; Group B, groundwater of surrounding areas to the depressions of Laguna Chasicó and Salinas Grandes; Group C, groundwater from Médanos; and Group D, groundwater with obvious signs of evaporation. Results confirm the significance and extent of the high concentrations of As in the region, with maximum values in Médanos and surrounding areas (Group C), which make the abatement of As for water supply a priority. To explain the high values of Médanos groundwater (median, 659 mg l-1 of As, maximum, 2140 mg l-1 As), we are working with the hypothesis of both a palaeogeographic control (palaeochannels), which isolated hydrogeologically these aquifers, and a geochemical control based on ion exchange processes. The latter seems to play a decisive role in the mobility of As. These factors explain also the parallelism in the behavior of As, F, V, Mo and U.
