Evaluación de la contaminación de elementos trazas en la microcuenca del Arroyo Cañete, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract

Se ha investigado el contenido de elementos trazas potencialmente tóxicos en las aguas subterráneas de la microcuenca del Arroyo Cañete (provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina). Esta área se sitúa en la Pampa Ondulada, tiene suaves pendientes y limitada velocidad de escorrentía. El principal uso del terreno es agropecuario, predominando los suelos de tipo Argiudoles y Natracuoles. El abastecimiento hídrico para uso doméstico y agropecuario se basa en la explotación de las aguas subterráneas del acuífero Puelches y del acuífero Pampeano. Se muestrearon 10 perforaciones y 5 puntos superficiales en el Arroyo Cañete. Se determinaron in situ pH, temperatura y conductividad específica y en el laboratorio las concentraciones de los parámetros hídricos mayoritarios, así como las concentraciones de Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Br, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Sb, Se, Sr, Th, Tl, U, V y Zn. La calidad de las aguas respecto a los elementos trazas es, salvo casos puntuales, apta para los usos locales. Las excepciones puntuales se deben tanto a procesos naturales como antropogénicos. Los procesos naturales pueden deteriorar la calidad induciendo concentraciones elevadas de B y U (para irrigación) y V (para irrigación y bebida de ganado). En el caso del arsénico, conviene controlar su concentración ya que se han detectado valores próximos a su nivel de referencia para consumo humano. En cuanto a los procesos antropogénicos afectan al incremento de metales como Cr, Cu y Zn. Se recomienda controlar los fenómenos puntuales de contaminación a fin de eliminarlos. Por otra parte, es conveniente adecuar las explotaciones agropecuarias a fin de reducir la contaminación difusa de nitratos. Las prácticas de irrigación pueden contribuir a salinizar el suelo, por lo que deben ser gestionadas adecuadamente para minimizar este factor de deterioro de la calidad del agua.
