Acanthostyles buniifolius (Hook. & Arn.) R.M. King & H. Rob. (“chirca”) es una especie endémica sudamericana de gran importancia desde el punto de vista biológico y agronómico. Se destaca su importancia ecológica por ser un elemento dominante de ecosistemas donde conforma poblaciones extensas denominadas chircales. A su vez, posee un alto potencial colonizador y es considerada maleza en muchas áreas de cultivo. A. buniifolius se distribuye desde Bolivia, norte de Argentina, sur de Brasil y Uruguay hasta el norte de Patagonia, siguiendo lo que se conoce como el Arco Peripampásico.
