Microglial cells are the resident immune cells of the CNS and act as sensors of neural activity. Neurons play a relevant role in maintaining microglial cells in a non-activated/surveilling state under physiological conditions, through a series of inhibitory mechanisms. However, chronic glial activation/neuroinflammation has been described in neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting that these mechanisms have been overloaded.
