Anthropogenic activities have generated diffuse pollution that is globally distributed throughout the planet. This background pollution is not innocuous. In recent decades, harmful health effects have been identified even in organisms at remote sites. There is therefore a need to understand what chemical compounds are responsible for these effects and to evaluate their temporal and spatial trends. High-mountain areas provide the most remote continental systems where this pollution can be studied. Organic pollutants reach these ecosystems after long-range atmospheric transport and deposition. Their analysis with passive low-cost and low-environmental-impact methodologies is needed for practical purposes and is attractive for sustainability reasons.
