Durante el Grand Tour la aristocracia británica atesoró obras de arte italianas que enviaban a Gran Bretaña en barco. El Westmorland, un navío de bandera inglesa que regresaba a Inglaterra fue capturado en 1778 por la marina francesa con gran cantidad de obras de arte, libros y otros objetos preciosos. El contenido de su carga fue comprado por la corona española al gobierno francés y los objetos fueron repartidos entre varios museos españoles. Entre otros objetos al Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales llegaron varias mesas lapidario.
