En el contexto subantártico, el interés que presenta la fauna marina fueguina (Tierra de Fuego) viene determinado por el rol ecológico y biogeográfico que desempeñan las especies en el poblamiento reciente (algo menos de 20 000 años, debido a la fusión de las cuencas glaciares) de los canales marinos de conexión entre los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico meridionales y la consiguiente expansión y competencia genética entre ambos océanos.
