The Archivo General de Indias in Seville is home to a file of a 1559 lawsuit between Alonso Pérez, a priest and copyist from Medina del Campo, and Francisco Fernández de Córdoba, a well-known printer from Valladolid, active between 1541 and 1570. Each of them wanted exclusive rights to publish, for a decade, the chant books for the New World; it was decided that both would print together 500 chant books on parchment and paper, and would provide up to 2000 volumes each year for the churches in America. The large number of volumes mentioned in the lawsuit (6000 or 7000) points out the importance of this transatlantic trade in the 16th century. The article reproduces two pages of plainchant that were included in the lawsuit to show the skills of both copyists.
