Abstract

Throughout the 16th century the local oligarchies in Italy showed a growing interest in obtaining attributes of honour that would serve as distinguishing marks in the aristocratic networks of court society. During the reign of Philip II the sale of noble titles in the territories of Italy became an instrument to obtain immediate resources in the context of the wars of the North. The council of Italy in Madrid and the governors and courts of Milan competed to channel the honor market. From 1635 the open war with France caused a state of war emergency in Lombardy, which was aggravated after the revolts of 1640. The sale of titles and fiefdoms was one more tool in the mobilization of resources for the defense. Throughout the reign of Philip IV, successive attempts to create a printed catalogue of the nobility titled in the State of Milan highlighted the structural heterogeneity of the Lombard nobility, as well as the complex foundations of social distinction in the hierarchy of ranks, in an area in which the practices, customs and materiality of privilege converged
