Human and murine phagocytic cells contain several 16:1 fatty acid isomers, and some of these, when added at low micromolar concentrations to cells, possess marked anti-inflammatory activity. While much work still needs to be carried out to unravel the effects of 16:1 fatty acids on innate immune cells, the elucidation of intracellular pathways utilized by these fatty acids might provide interesting opportunities of intervention to ameliorate the inflammatory response.
