UNA NUEVA APROXIMACIÓN A LA GESTIÓN DE LA BIODIVERSIDAD DEL MEDITERRÁNEO: CONECTIVIDAD ENTRE HÁBITATS DE LA PLATAFORMA CONTINENTAL

Abstract

En el medio marino, la mayor parte de las reservas marinas se encuentran en la zona litoral y la posible extensión con la plataforma o el mar profundo se plantea como un enfoque ecosistémico. La mayor parte de las plataformas han recibido el impacto de la pesca de arrastre que ha incrementado de una forma exponencial el fraccionamiento del hábitat marino. Pero existen pocas evidencias experimentales del tránsito o de la conexión entre hábitats litorales y profundos, especialmente de la zona profunda de la plataforma continental. Una de las razones de esta falta de estudios es la convicción por parte de muchos investigadores de que las poblaciones y especies litorales tienen una escasa continuidad y movilidad hacia mayor profundidad. La localización de comunidades aún preservadas del efecto de la pesca de arrastre en algunas plataformas y el incremento del rango de distribución de muchas especies estructurales como esponjas, cnidarios o briozoos que pueden formar poblaciones que podrían funcionar a nivel de metapoblaciones, ha abierto una nueva línea de investigación. Estas especies sésiles y estructurales son el hábitat refugio y zona de guardería de muchas otras especies que residen temporalmente en las zonas de plataforma. La necesidad de restablecer la conectividad entre los hábitats y garantizar un funcionamiento ecosistémico de las áreas marinas protegidas plantea la necesidad de creación de corredores biológicos a lo largo de las plataformas.
