Abstract

[EN] Phytoremediation is the technology which uses plants to remove pollutants from the environment that has resulted from mining, industrial, agricultural and military practices. Little is known on the metabolic pathways in the transformation of xenobiotic compounds and in the ability of certain plants to tolerate, detoxify and store high concentrations of heavy metals. Plant cell and tissue culture may be considered an important tool in phytoremediation studies, specifically to increase our understanding of the plant-contaminant relationship, to predict the response of whole plants to environmental pollutants and to develop plants with enhanced capacity of phytoremediation. In this article, the role of in vitro tissue culture techniques on phytoremediation studies is reviewed.
