La formación de una imagen de oriente en la España de Felipe II: la "historia del Gran Reino de la China" de Juan González de Mendoza

Abstract

La historiografía modernista y los estudios hispánicos de los últimos años han vivido un renovado interés por aquellas figuras que desde un aparente segundo plano construyeron el proyecto imperial ibérico con sus experiencias en lugares remotos o mediante sus contribuciones al corpus cultural de la monarquia. Es el caso de Juan González de Mendoza, autor de una muy difundida H1".Jtoria de la China, que, sin haber estado nunca en Oriente, nos ofrece una singular pieza del rompecabezas del proyecto planetario de Felipe II y nos permite, a través de una relectura de las fuentes junto al manejo de nuevas aportaciones documentales, una reinterpretación de su papel en la historia cultural.

El desarrollo de esta investigación y su comunicación es posible gracias a la red Poder y Represrmtaoiones del Departamento de Historia Moderna de la Universidad de Barcelona y al apoyo del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad del Gobierno de España mediante el proyecto "Poder y representaciones en la Edad Moderna: la monarquía hispánica como campo cultural (1500-1800)" (Ref HAR2012-39516-C02-01).
