In the present review, the basis on the properties and the newest applications of gas expanded liquids and switchable solvents are presented, focusing in the systems that have in common the use of carbon dioxide to modify the chemical and/or physical properties of the solvents. The use of these types of solvents to develop chemical and technological processes contributing to sustainability is emphasized by discussing some relevant examples.
