Influence of natural cover vs. tillage on the nutritional satatus of vines, yield and grape juice quality

Abstract

[EN] The relation between yield and grape quality is widely known in the actual viticulture. In this sense, after the vine spacing, conduction system, and rootstock-variety combination are established, crop management techniques have great influence on yield and therefore on the potential grape quality. Irrigation or soil management are both factors included within these influential techniques. Vegetal covers are amply used for soil management in different viticultural regions around the world. However, the use of covers has a low importance in Spain, where vineyards are amply grown under semiarid conditions, without irrigation and with conventional tillage. When covers are used, natural or sowed, irrigation is also frequently used. Natural or Spontaneous Covers are an alternative to sowed cover crops that allow us to combine a cover with dry conditions. However, low hydric availability conditions could suppose a strong competing for water and soil nutrients by the cover, that could affect the canopy biomass, yield and finally to the vintage quality.
