Drip irrigation of the "Tempranillo blanco" variety (Vitis Vinifera L.) in a vineyard sheltered by AOC Rioja (Spain)

Abstract

Until the year 2008, the only ones white varieties sheltered by the AOC Rioja (Spain) were: ‘Viura’, ‘Garnacha blanca’ and ‘Malvasía’, representing ‘Viura’ practically the 100% of the total surface grown with white varieties and a 15% of the total vineyard surface in the AOC. In this context, since 1995 the viticultural and oenological behaviour of a new white variety, ‘Tempranillo blanco’, is studied with the objective of the increase the personality and typicity of the white wines from the AOC Rioja. ‘Tempranillo blanco' was obtained in 1988 from a natural mutation of the red cultivar 'Tempranillo' and was authorized by the AOC Rioja in 2008. The Vitivinicultural Research Service of the Regional Government of La Rioja set up a experimental vineyards net grown with ‘Tempranillo blanco’, located at eight different locations throughout the AOC Rioja, considering the influence of the environment diversity and the different growing conditions.
