Octavio Augusto como modelo político en la "Historia romana" de Nicéforo Gregorás

Abstract

Nicéforo Gregorás en su Historia romana (s. xiv) utiliza la figura de Augusto para explicar cómo Alejo Apocauco, un pretendiente al trono de Constantinopla, aumentó su poder durante los turbulentos años de la II Guerra civil (1341–47). Octavio habría servido de inspiración a Apocauco para llevar a cabo determinadas maniobras políticas con las que aumentó enormemente su poder en Constantinopla. Casio Dión (s. III) y el Epítome de Juan Jifilino (s. XI) son las fuentes históricas que permitieron a Gregorás conocer la historia del Principado y le dieron las claves interpretativas de la historia contemporánea. Sus anotaciones en el margen del códice más antiguo conservado de Casio Dión (el Marc. gr. 395, s. X) y sus notas de lectura del Epítome de Jifilino conservadas en el Palat. Heidelberg. gr. 129 son la prueba material de su conocimiento del Principado de Augusto
