Si analízanos el significado básico de la palabra tolerantia en la lengua latina, parece que es casi un sinónimo de patientia ya que, de un modo u otro, incluye la aceptación de un sufrimiento. Y así, tanto el sustantivo tolerantia como el verbo tolerare, los encontramos usados con frecuencia como regentes de términos que habitual u ocasionalmente pueden provocar sufrimiento: tolerare militian, damna, iniurias, fanem, vitam, etc.
