Biodegradación de la lignocelulosa: una fuente de biocatalizadores para una industria sostenible

Abstract

Durante estos primeros años se identificaron diferentes patrones de biodegradación y se seleccionaron hongos modelo con potencial biotecnológico para el aprovechamiento de la biomasa vegetal (Camarero et al., 1998). En estudios posteriores se determinó que su capacidad ligninolítica residía en la producción de oxidorreductasas extracelulares de tipo peroxidasa y oxidasa (incluyendo lacasas) capaces de actuar sinérgicamente sobre las unidades fenilpropano de la lignina y degradar también una variedad de compuestos aromáticos recalcitrantes.

El grupo de Biotecnología para la Biomasa Lignocelulósica (https://bit.ly/2Fy0ITm) liderado por los profesores María Jesús Martínez y Ángel T. Martínez comenzó su andadura en la década de los 80 con el estudio (en colaboración con el Dr Aldo González) de los hongos saprófitos que producen el llamado “palo podrido” (Fig. 1) en la pluvisilva chilena (Martínez et al., 1995).

El estudio del material degradado y de los hongos implicados llevó a demostrar que la podredumbre de la madera tenía su origen en la degradación de la lignina, un polímero aromático difícil de descomponer que actúa como soporte estructural y protege a los polisacáridos de la pared celular vegetal frente al ataque de microorganismos.
