Abstract

[ES] En este trabajo el autor profundiza en la biografía de Justo Gárate Arriola (1900-1994) que, como la de tantos otros médicos y científicos de su generación, se rompió con el estallido de la Guerra Civil. Afortunadamente, Garate fue capaz de integrarse pronto y plenamente en Argentina hasta convertirla en una "segunda patria", donde prosiguió hasta el final de sus días una fecunda carrera profesional interrumpida por la tragedia de la guerra. Su actitud ante el exilio contrasta con la de una mayoría de "expatriados de la comunidad vasca" para los que "la diáspora fue un estigma de muy difícil superación". Además de su actividad científica, destacan las notables traducciones que Garate preparó durante las décadas de 1940 y 1950 para emblemáticas editoriales argentinas.

[EU] Lan honetan Justo Gárate Arriolaren (1900-1994) biografian sakontzen du egileak, hau da, bere belaunaldiko beste mediku eta zientzialari batzuen antzera, Gerra Zibilaren agerraldiarekin moztu zen. Zorionez, Garate laster eta erabat integratu ahal izan zen Argentinan "bigarren aberria" bihurtu zen arte, non egunen amaiera arte gerraren tragediak eten zuen ibilbide oparoa jarraitu zuen. Erbesteratzearen aurkako jarrera "euskal komunitateko atzerritar gehienen" aldean dago. Diaspora gainditzeko oso zaila zen estigma bat zen. Bere jarduera zientifikoaz gain, Garate 1940ko eta 1950eko hamarkadetan Argentinako argitaletxe enblematikoentzako prestatu zituen itzulpen aipagarriak nabarmentzen dira.
