La antigua "historia natural" era vastísima y -limitándonos al campo de lo biológico- al deegajarse de ella las ciencias fundamentadas sólidamente en el análisis morfológico (sistemática, morfología, anatomía, histología...) o en el estudio experimental (fisiología), quedó una pequeña "historia natural", no incluíble en aquellas ciencias.
