Das penas do purgatório à punição no quotidiano claustral feminino em Portugal

Abstract

Além das Regras primaciais, os Regulamentos, Estatutos e Definições de distintas ordens religiosas estabelecem que comportamentos femininos em clausura poderiam ser considerados dignos de punição em Portugal no período moderno. A análise dos Livros de Visitas de mosteiros e conventos permite entender, numa perspectiva diacrónica, as gradações das penas aplicadas de acordo com os comportamentos observados [e que variavam também com a hierarquia interna das comunidades], procurando-se ainda a existência de distintas punições para faltas similares de acordo com os padrões de comportamento exigidos pelas diferentes Ordens. Efectivamente, da privação do leito à privação das grades do parlatório, da expulsão do mosteiro à ameaça de excomunhão, passando pela humilhação perante a comunidade conventual, as penas eram diversas, fazendo do universo claustral, simultaneamente universo de libertação para muitas mulheres, um mundo fechado e à mercê do ideal disciplinador de bispos, abades, confessores e visitadores. A análise compreende, a montante, a legislação vigente na altura em Portugal e as Constituições de Bispados, enquadrando a importância do Purgatório no panorama europeu pós- Trento, particularmente nas comunidades femininas.
