La apariencia en tiempos de cónclave. Bienes del cardenal Solís en la corte de Roma (1774-1775)

Abstract

A lo largo de la Edad Moderna, diversos intelectuales disertaron sobre la imagen del gobernante eclesiástico coincidiendo en que éste debía buscar la fama a través del ejercicio de la virtud, soslayando la riqueza. Sin embargo, esta construcción ideal poco tuvo que ver con la realidad. Con independencia de la caridad que practicase y el culto que fomentara, el alto clero español del Setecientos aspiró a mejorar su patrimonio asociándose fundamentalmente al Estado, presentador de las mejores prebendas y beneficios desde el siglo XVI. Siguiendo esta idea, nuestro trabajo pretende poner de relieve los bienes y pertenencias de uno de los prelados más influyentes de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI: Francisco Solís, arzobispo de Sevilla y cardenal desde 1756, que tuvo la oportunidad de representar los intereses españoles en Roma hasta en dos ocasiones por la muerte de los papas Clemente XII y Clemente XIV. Aunque la estancia del cardenal en dicha ciudad ya ha sido abordada por otros autores, nuestra propuesta se centra sobre una fuente todavía inédita: el inventario de bienes que por motivo de su fallecimiento compusiera la embajada de España en 1775.
