Contribución al estudio de la correspondencia de Simón Ruiz Embito: las cartas desde Sevilla del Fondo Altamira de Vivero (1567-1568)

Abstract

El puerto de Sevilla fue el más importante de España durante todo el siglo XVI. Barcos procedentes de todos los rincones de Europa atracaban junto a la Torre del Oro para descargar sus preciadas mercaderías, aunque las naves que más interesaron siempre, debido al oro y la plata que transportaban, fueron las procedentes de Indias. Todos los grandes mercaderes europeos habían enviado allí a sus agentes, factores y corresponsales para obtener las condiciones más ventajosas en sus contrataciones. El burgalés Simón Ruiz Embito no fue una excepción y, aunque nunca demostró agrado por esa plaza, en la urbe hispalense tampoco faltaron sus agentes. Éstos no sólo le comunicaron noticias relativas al tráfico mercantil, al cambio de moneda o al cobro de letras de cambio. Sus misivas también estuvieron salpicadas de jugosas noticias sobre la vida cotidiana que nos introducen de lleno en la sociedad sevillana que más tarde retrataron los dramaturgos de nuestro Siglo de Oro. La correspondencia conservada en el Archivo Histórico de la Nobleza de Toledo, inédita hasta el momento, nos permitirá estudiar la información mercantil y los entresijos comerciales que podían interesar a un mercader a tantas leguas de distancia de Sevilla.
