Abstract

Este trabajo intenta explicar el aumento del contrabando del jengibre desde el Caribe a Europa desde las últimas décadas del siglo XVI. Su tesis fundamental es que dicho aumento se ha de relacionar con el desarrollo del corsarismo y del comercio internacional, así como con el impacto de la revuelta de los Países Bajos (1568-1648) y la guerra entre España e Inglaterra (1585-1604). Más allá del papel de los intereses sevillanos, la influencia de sus gremios así como la de su Consulado, se tendrá en cuenta el posible impacto de la demanda de dos productos concretos, cueros y jengibre, en Inglaterra y los Países Bajos y las posibilidades de contrabando que tal asociación presentaba.

Este trabajo se ha realizado en el marco del Proyecto de Excelencia de la Junta de Andalucía P09-HUM5330, Nuevos Productos Atlánticos. Ciencia, Guerra, Economía y Consumo en el Antiguo Régimen, 1492-1824,” dirigido por el profesor Bartolomé Yun Casalilla, y del Subprograma Ramón y Cajal del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España (2012).
