Comercio ilegal: el contrabando de caballos en el siglo XVI

Abstract

Desde la Edad Media se mantiene la prohibición de sacar caballos de los reinos hispánicos. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, se recrudece un comercio ilegal basado en el contrabando de caballos, especialmente con destino a Francia y Bearne. El contexto político-religioso de ese período justifica que Felipe II decida encargar a la Inquisición el control y represión de esta actividad contrabandista. La fundamentación radica en la necesidad de impedir el apoyo a los herejes con armas y caballos. El análisis de las fuentes nos permite identificar el amplísimo campo de competencias de la Inquisición, más allá de la salvaguarda de la fe católica. La documentación consultada nos da a conocer desde las medidas preventivas hasta las penas impuestas públicamente en autos de fe. La situación es compleja y no tiene solamente una vertiente comercial, sino que además de aspectos económicos concurren elementos políticos, sociales y religiosos. Completamos la visión del contrabando exterior de caballos con otros casos que se protagonizan con Portugal, resueltos en el marco de la autoridad civil, sin la intervención de la Inquisición.
