Mercaderes de seda, "verlegers" y veinticuatros: los Castellano de Marquina de Granada (1569-1644)

Abstract

En esta comunicación trataré de presentar un colectivo de vital importancia para la economía de la ciudad de Granada y su reino en el siglo XVI: los mercaderes de seda. Para ello utilizaré el ejemplo de los Castellano de Marquina, mercaderes judeoconversos que, en situaciones de putting-out system, participaron en la producción y comercio de telas de seda granadinas (damascos, tafetanes, terciopelos, rasos) durante gran parte de la Edad Moderna. Como mercaderes-empresarios (verlegers), los Castellano adquirían los capullos de seda de productores rurales, contrataban a hiladores, torcedores, tejedores y tintoreros en la ciudad y finalmente distribuían el producto por un territorio muy amplio que no se limitaba al reino granadino y donde destacaba la ciudad de Sevilla, puerto de las Indias. Al mismo tiempo estos mercaderes adquirieron gran poder al ocupar oficios de jurados y veinticuatros, dirigiendo la ciudad en ambas facetas económica y política. No les fue difícil ennoblecerse y obtener mercedes de hábitos militares.
