De comboieiros de negros a camaristas e cavaleiros: perfil econômico e estratégias de ascensáo social na América portuguesa

Abstract

O objetivo desta comunicação é analisar as estratégias de ascensão social características dos indivíduos que foram listados em 1756 como os mais ricos moradores de uma das primeiras vilas criadas na região aurífera da América portuguesa na primeira metade do século XVII (Vila do Carmo, posteriormente cidade de Mariana). Grande parte desses homens eram originários da região norte de Portugal, dedicavam-se à mercancia nos anos iniciais de seu deslocamento para a América e, nessa nova terra, conseguiram se projetar social e politicamente. Procurarei traçar a origem, o perfil econômico, as características dos enlaces matrimoniais, e alguns aspectos da inserção política e das redes sociais em que estavam envolvidos alguns dos 175 personagens que aparecem na listagem de homens ricos de 1756. Para tanto lançarei mão da documentação cartorial (inventários e testamentos), da documentação eclesiástica (processos matrimoniais), além dos processos de habilitação para a Ordem de Cristo e para o Santo Ofício localizados para tais indivíduos. Este trabalho conta com o financiamento da FAPEMIG e do CNPQ.
