[EN] This paper addresses the debate on the single or multiple origin of metallurgy, and the role of metals in social development in European Prehistory, especially regarding the Iberian Peninsula. Although the majority of researchers accept that in its early stages metallurgy had no significant impact on economic and social changes in most European societies, there are conflicting opinions with respect to the Iberian Peninsula. These divergences derive from varying interpretations of data provided by archeometallurgical analyses.
