Abstract

A. máxima es una cianobacteria comercial (Spirulina). Dentro de nuestra línea de investigación focalizada hacia la identificación de alomonas, hemos observado que se reivindican para los metabolitos de esta especie actividad antifúngica, antiviral y antioxidante. Mientras que la actividad fungicida y antiviral se achaca a compuestos de estructura ya conocida (un fenol concreto y un sulfolípido), la actividad antioxidante se ha achacado a una amplia variedad de estructuras químicas, como ácido ascórbico, tocoferoles, aminoácidos no comunes, carotenos, clorofilas, xantofilas, ácidos grasos poliinsaturados, escitonemina, péptidos, fenoles, glicolipidos, fosfolípidos, polisacáridos, etc. Es sorprendente que entre estos compuestos “antioxidantes” figuren escitonemina y varios fenoles típicos de las plantas superiores, como pinostrobina y los ácidos gállico, chlorogenico, cinámico y p-OH-benzoico. Dada la confusión que estos datos generan, y dado que los mismos fueron obtenidos mediante métodos analíticos no rigurosos (espectrofotometría y HPLC), nos hemos propuesto profundizar en el conocimiento químico de la especie A. máxima, mediante técnicas avanzadas de purificación y análisis estructural. Por extracción con aparato soxhlet de la biomasa de A. maxima con acetona seguida de filtración, concentración y cromatografía en columna de gel de sílice se obtuvieron sucesivas fracciones de polaridad creciente. Los metabolitos puros se purificaron por TLC preparativa y fueron identificados por resonancia magnética nuclear y espectrometría de masas. Entre los metabolitos aislados figuran carotenos, xantofilas, clorofilas, etc., pero no se ha observado ni escitonemina ni ningún shikimato.
