La literatura biográfica andalusí contiene un corto número de biografías de mujeres devotas (ṣāliḥāt), cuyas características más notables son la dedicación a la lectura del Corán, la limosna, la vida retirada y el ayuno. Gracias a estos y otros textos, puede apreciarse cómo las dos últimas prácticas mencionadas llegaron a conformar un ámbito específico de dedicación religiosa entre las mujeres andalusíes; en particular, el caso del ayuno revela fórmulas de anulación del cuerpo destinadas a trascender las limitaciones impuestas a las mujeres por la ortopraxis islámica.
