El conocimiento y los contactos entre el mundo árabe clásico y Bizancio fueron constantes desde mucho antes de la aparición del Islam. El desarrollo espectacular de la cultura árabe-islámica, paralelo a la fulgurante expasión militar, cambió por completo la situación anterior al siglo WI, pero no por ello dejaron de mantenerse, entre ambas civilizaciones, unas relaciones permanentes, tanto culturales como económicas y diplomáticas; relaciones, por otra parte, que corren paralelas a los enfrentarnientos militares.
