La inseguridad para la navegación en los puertos de las "cuatro villas" cantábricas, en los últimos años del reinado de Felipe II

Abstract

La inseguridad derivada de la conflictividad bélica resulta ser uno de los principales condicionantes negativos para el desarrollo de la actividad pesquera y comercial de los puertos de las Cuatro Villas cantábricas en los últimos años del reinado de Felipe II. Daremos noticia de los fallidos intentos llevados a cabo por la Administración filipina para estabilizar la zona y dar seguridad a las comunicaciones con el Atlántico septentrional, consciente de la importancia económica y estratégica de este espacio. A través del análisis de los protocolos notariales y las cartas comerciales hemos estudiado las consecuencias que tales circunstancias e iniciativas supusieron para la navegación en los puertos cantábricos; entre ellas la participación de los armadores cántabros en una actividad hasta entonces prácticamente desconocida como era el corso, o la sustitución progresiva en los tráficos de las naves cántabras por otras de procedencia extranjera.
