Abstract

Dada la situación actual del sector de las energías renovables en general y la del biodiesel en particular, es de vital importancia conseguir la optimización de los procesos productivos para favorecer la subsistencia de dicha industria. La producción de biodiesel genera 10% de glicerina como subproducto, lo cual ha provocado una caída radical de los precios de la misma, siendo prioritario encontrar aplicaciones industriales para su valorización. Por otro lado, la revalorización de subproductos presenta una ventaja a nivel internacional, dado que con ello se cierra un ciclo industrial de ventajas económicas y medioambientales, que facilitan el acercamiento hacia un desarrollo sostenible, ya que se eliminan desechos que a menudo presentan un problema medioambiental, a la vez que se convierten los residuos en materiales de valor añadido y se disminuye la necesidad de materias primas a menudo no renovables. Con todo ello en mente, se ha abordado esta investigación utilizando subproductos de producción de girasol para preparar catalizadores capaces de transformar glicerina en éteres, que pueden utilizados como aditivos en combustibles, entre otras interesantes aplicaciones. Los catalizadores preparados en este estudio son de hecho Ecomateriales y presentan importantes beneficios frente al uso de los comerciales.

Comunicación presentada en el 12º Congreso Nacional del Medio Ambiente (2014), que tuvo lugar en Madrid entre el 24 y el 27 de noviembre de 2014.
