La diplomacia de Floridablanca

Abstract

Floridablanca potenció la Monarquía española como sujeto político, para ello realizó su paulatina reincorporación a Europa priorizando los intereses estratégicos y comerciales. Se independizó de la tutela francesa y aprovechó el inesperado declive inglés tras 1783 para acceder a acuerdos amistosos con el Islam, Portugal, Italia, y Europa del Norte y oriental. Su apoyo a la neutralidad armada y el refuerzo de las fuerzas navales, pretendían evitar futuros enfrentamientos directos con Inglaterra a la que pretendía aislar de sus tradicionales aliados. Resuelto y reivindicativo intentó confeccionar proactivamente una red diplomática basada en una política de realizaciones buscando el equilibrio con dedicación y negociación que protegiera los dominios americanos. Perfeccionó el servicio exterior configurando un cuerpo diplomático cada vez más monopolizado por los oficiales de la Secretaría de Estado e impulsó la despatrimonialización de las embajadas, creando nuevas embajadas, nuevas legaciones y nuevos consulados. En fin, identificó los problemas y ocultó la debilidad de la Monarquía y su necesidad de transformarse.
