Abstract

[EN]: The present paper describes a monitoring system with-video-cameras, and the methodology used to install these, as part of a research project on the reproductive biology of the Bearded Vulture. Breeding pairs were selected according to the physical characteristics of the nesting site (accessibility to the eyrie, proximity to roads or tracks) and to the breeding track record of the specific pair (pairs with a well-known breeding phenology, as well as a high reproduclive success). In order to keep disturbance to a minimum, increase acceptance of the system and allow for a possible change of nest site, the equipment was installed during the species' pre-laying period (October - November). It took a mean of 3.5 h (n = 3) to install the equipment in each nest. Both of the nests on which this account is based were revisited by the adult birds less than 5 days after the equipment was installed. None of the birds showed any behaviour that could reveal rejection or anxiety linked to the presence of the camera. The problerns that occurred most frequently were air condensation on the camera lens and a displacement of the focus point caused by a small movement of the camera. However, the study could be finalised successfully as all the aspects originally planned could be documented and all the objectives could be achieved. From the results obtained it is obvious that the methodology used for the installation of the equipment was the correct one and that previously unknown data on the species' biology and behaviour could be obtained as expected. This means that there is a positive balance in the use of this type of technique for the study of this and other cliff-nesting raptor species.
