Reversos del indigenismo: el “carácter especial” de los indígenas como elemento constitutivo del campo indigenista

Abstract

Desde la perspectiva del “campo indigenista interamericano”, que hemos desarrollado en los últimos años, proponemos una revisión de los “reversos del indigenismo”, es decir de los procesos por los cuales algunos de los elementos fundacionales y programáticos del indigenismo, en especial sus objetivos de redención histórica de “los indígenas” y afirmación cultural de lo “indígena”, derivaron en una reproducción antihistórica y reificadora de la categoría de indígena. El indigenismo asumió y difundió la existencia de un “carácter especial” de los indígenas, una marca de continuidad identitaria y a-histórica, fundada en rasgos y elementos estigmatizados. Además, estableció un vínculo entre ese supuesto carácter especial atribuido (individual y colectivamente) a los indígenas y la legitimidad de los proyectos y políticas relacionados con ellos. Esto constituiría el núcleo duro del indigenismo y no –como suele considerarse– su faceta integracionista. Consideramos que el establecimiento de ese vínculo habría sido fundamental para la configuración del campo indigenista, en el que pueden caber enfoques asimilacionistas, integracionistas e incluso multiculturalistas. Representaría así el mayor reverso y, al mismo tiempo, el mayor legado del indigenismo
