Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are complex and diverse natural phenomena governed by physical, chemical, biological and ecological processes that interact over a large range of scales. This presentation will focus on small-scale physical-biological interactions as well as chemically driven relationships between HAB species and components of the food web. Specifically, the presentation will summarize the present understanding of: 1) the dynamics of planktonic HABs on thin layers in stratified systems; 2) the emerging threat posed by benthic HAB species; and 3) the modulation of physiological processes in phytoplankton modulated by turbulence at the Kolmogorov microscale. Selected case studies will illustrate some open questions and the potential offered by new and multidisciplinary approaches and advanced instrumentation, trying to build the bridge from the laboratory to the ecosystem
