Una defensa de la soberanía en el contexto del imperialismo: la colonización española de las islas Carolinas y Palaos

Abstract

La presencia española en las islas Filipinas. Carolinas, Marianas y Palaos hay que ponerla en relación coi1 los grandes viajes de descubrimiento y exploración del mundo vividos en el siglo XVI. En aquel contexto, y en dura competencia con los navegantes portugueses, los expedicionarios españoles se aventuraron por latitudes orientales siguiendo la ruta de las especias, en busca de nuevas fuentes de riqueza para la Corona española; se sentían atraídos por la aventura de descubrir y conquista- unas tierras exóticas que parecían llenas de tesoros por recoges, y de las que deseaban tomas posesión en nombre del rey de España; estaban también impulsados por el afán de encontrar nuevas rutas que uniean las vastas posesiones españolas en Europa, América y Oriente. Tras los primeros viajes de descubrimiento y exploración, con el pasas de los años, se impulsaron desde Nueva España expediciones de conquista con un doble objetivo: aprovechas aquellas islas en beneficio de la Corona, impulsando desde ellas el comercio con los puertos asiáticos; y colonizarlas de la manera que se hacía entonces, esto es, evangelizándolas con misioneros de distintas ordenes religiosas, para así tener control sobre ellas y tratar de asimilarlas a la civilización occidental.
