On the value of museum collections: Establishing a neolectotype for Plesionika antigai Zariquiey Alvarez 1955

Abstract

Pandalidae are very diverse, with more than 189 species distributed in 23 genera, and have great ecological significance, constituting the bulk of the diet of mesopelagic (200 to 1000 m depth) and deep sea fish. The group is worldwide distributed and, despite most pandalids are intertropical, they can reach high latitudes in both hemispheres. Although they are crucial for epibenthic and continental slope food chains, many aspects of the biology, ecology and systematics of these shrimp are still unknown. During a revision of original descriptions of species within the Pandalidae, we detected the need to determine a neolectotype of Plesionika antigai Zariquiey-Alvarez 1955. In the present study, we have revised specimens from different museum collections and particularly the Zariquiey Alvarez collection kept in Barcelona. The revision allowed us to find the Plesionika species material collected from the Iberian Peninsula by Zariquiey Alvarez, and to select a neolectotype and paralectotypes from the material deposited in the collections of the Institute of Marine Science (Barcelona). Establishing a neolectotype for P. antigai is crucial for further morphological comparisons between Plesionika species and it will allow for improved identifications in shrimp fisheries studies
