Abstract

El 14 de mayo de 1606, tras una penosa navegación, Pedro Fernández de Quirós se arrodilló en un islote del Pacífico Sur y tomó posesión de la Tierra Austral en el nombre de Dios y en el de España. Era el día de Pentecostés y la empresa estaba patrocinada por la Corona, por lo que Quirós bautizó su hallazgo bajo el nombre de Austrialia del Espíritu Santo. Quedaba así inaugurado el descubrimiento de la Quarta Pars Incognita, el fabuloso continente ideado por los antiguos, la supuesta masa de tierra que debía yacer oculta en las antípodas.
