La proyección de España en el Pacífico durante la época del imperialismo

Abstract

El presente artículo estudia la participación de España en el contexto internacional del Pacífico durante los años del auge del imperialismo, en las últimas décadas del siglo xix. La nación, en aquellos años, tenía soberanía sobre las islas Filipinas, las Marianas, las Carolinas y las Palaos, enclaves todos ellos ambicionados por las grandes potencias en proceso de expansión en el Extremo Oriente. España no podía sumarse a aste proceso, paro estaba dispuesta a defender su dominio sobre los territorios que poseía. En el artículo se analizan la importancia que tenían para España los archipiélagos mencionados, las razones por las que se defendió su mantenimiento y la política internacional desplegada en ellos, dedicando un especial interés al caso de las Carolinas, los motivos por los que se creó esta colonia en 1885, al modelo colonial adoptado y las directrices seguidas respecto a estas islas en el contexto internacional

[EN] The present article studies the participation o£ Spain in the international framework of $he Pacific during the age of the imperialism. In those days, the country had sovereignty over the Philippine, the Marianas, The Caroline and the Pelew islands. territories al1 o£ them seek for the Great Powers in expansion in the Far East. Spain could not participate in This process, hut she was decided to defend her domination over the colonies this article are analyzed the importance of those islands to Spain, the reasons by which Spain wanted to keep them and the foreign Policy designed with respect to them, dedicating an special attention to the case of the Caroline islands.
