MARAÑÓN no es un toponímico concreto. Hoy se llama así, al tramo superior del Amazonas en territorio peruano. En el siglo XVIII, se conocía con ese apelativo al río más caudaloso de Suramérica. En el XVII, Antonio León Pinelo diferenciaba con este nombre tres ríos : el Maranhao, el Amazonas y el Orinoco. Desde el descubrimiento en la costa de una desembocadura fluvial, que aún ahora no podemos localizar con toda exactitud, y a la que se le atribuyó el nombre de Marañón, la palabra ha errado libremente por la zona tropical suramericana.
